Oh, yes, the backstory.
I concocted this drawing to prove I'm normal. To my mathematical and engineering friends who understand these things.
"Normal?" They say, "You can't possibly prove to me that you're normal!"
Draw a curve, or a squiggle. I just draw a general arc, "the arc of humanity!" why not? So we have a curve, it's the general curve of humanity, the way that people are generally going.
We all know what the tangent is to a curve, it's roughly speaking where a line touches the curve only in one point (and yes, I know about inflection points and yadda yadda, but then I know you also know, and you know why I shorten it like this, let's just keep it simple).
The tangent is the direction that everyone is going at that instant. (Please, I know "everyone" is an overstatement, and just keep repeating that note just above to quiet that voice in your head).
And in math, a normal is a line at right angles to the tangent. (Take a look at the lovely description in https://www.mathcentre.ac.uk/resources/uploaded/mc-ty-tannorm-2009-1.pdf, where they write "In mathematics the word ‘normal’ has a very specific meaning. It means ‘perpendicular’ or ‘at right angles’." That's the one we're after).
So the "normal" to our curve, the general arc of humanity, is not going backwards against the direction of the mass of people, it's going sideways, independently compared to the rest.
So, I'm normal, see? <big grin>. And I'll bet a bunch of you are, too.
And my engineering friends go, "Grrrr", cuz they know I'm right.
A bunch of people started asking me for this drawing, on stickers, glasses, mugs, t-shirts. After many years, I'm finally getting around to making a tiny site just for this.
uh, did I already say? This is my play site. Tongue in cheek, but serious at the same time. So buy some merch :))
Here's the pic from the math book
iz me, but I'm a nobody
I don't even really exist, but there's my pic to fool you. Actually, this web site builder made a staff of four, but there's just me and my coffee.
uh, yeah, just modest
TBH, there aren't any. This is my test-play site. The Normal Is Perpendicular backstory is cool and I use it, and people ask me for a mug or t-shirt with that on, so I made this site. Aside from that, it serves as my test-playground for new web integrations, so expect odd things and randome noise to show up down here. E.g., all the stuff below here came with the template, I have no idea what they connect to, if anything. Not there yet. Enjoy! and did I already mention? Buy some merch. It makes me feel good, and puts a litte $$ into all the free stuff I put on the interwebs. Hugs and dances, as they say.
